Mike Carey’s football career ended after an ankle injury at Santa Clara University, but millions of people watched Mike on TV for nearly two decades during NFL games despite the injury. Mike served as an NFL official, and he was the first African American to serve as head referee for a Super Bowl game, Super Bowl XLII. Mike was voted “best referee” in an ESPN poll of NFL head coaches, an honor he shared with fellow official Ed Hochuli. Mike’s career in officiating started from humble origins. He began refereeing Pop Warner football games, followed by college games in the 1980’s. For those high school and college referees who you know, we offer a memorable award. Our Silver Whistle Award (item ASGS-S) comes in a solid oak case. Inside the case, soft black felt lines the entire interior. A silver whistle and black whistle tip cover rest on the felt. A silver engraving plate is mounted to the lid’s interior, and we will engrave up to four lines for free on the plate.
