The United States Senate uses an ivory gavel that is perhaps one of the most extraordinary gavels ever used. Besides the material used to create it, the gavel also has other unique features. First, the gavel has an unusual hourglass shape. Second, the gavel has no handle, so it is gripped by the slender center of the hourglass shape. The gavel was presented to the Senate by the Republic of India and first used on November 17, 1954. Although not as historic as the Senate’s gavel, we believe our Shield Gavel Plaque (item P286) will be fondly treasured by any lucky recipient. Measuring 9” x 12”, this walnut board shaped like a shield holds a full size gavel. The walnut gavel includes a gold band around the striking head. Below the gavel, a gold trimmed ebony engraving plate has been screwed into the walnut board. The plate will hold up to five lines for personalization, and our engraving is free. Make a historical moment in the life of an auctioneer, a judge, or some other board officer by presenting them our Shield Gavel Plaque!
